Insulation in Lyles, TN

Hickman County is drained by the Duck River, the Piney River and a long list of creeks large and small, including Cave Branch. That means the land around Lyles is cut by creek bottoms and hollows, and a lot of homes sit on ground that slopes toward one of them. The county has been settled for a long time. It was named for Edwin Hickman, a surveyor killed at Defeated Creek in 1791, and the Duck River valley was originally claimed by the Chickasaw. For metal shops and barns, closed-cell foam sprayed to the steel stops condensation at the surface rather than catching it after it forms.

• The crawl space and rim joist. Creek bottom humidity makes this the first job on most Lyles homes.
• The attic. Older rural homes here often have a fraction of the depth they should have. Sealing and topping up changes the house immediately.
• Metal shops and barns. Bare steel sweats. Foam on the steel ends the dripping.
• Floors over vented crawl spaces. Cold floors in a Lyles winter come from below, not from the walls.
• Rooms added over the years. Piecemeal additions usually have piecemeal insulation. They are worth a proper look.
